Is your retirement home ready for the next generation of seniors?

Posted on March 5, 2019 by Continyou Care

The idea that seniors are incapable of using technology is becoming more of a myth and less of a fact as technology has progressed. With many companies now creating tech specifically designed for seniors, and more seniors willing to use technology to make their lives easier, we ask the question, is your retirement home ready for this wave of tech-savvy seniors?

What technology do seniors use?

Nowadays, it’s not uncommon for each generation of a family to be on social media platforms with Facebook being the most popular by adults over the age of 55. Seniors love the idea of being able to see family photos, keep an eye on what their grandchildren are getting up to, and stay informed on local/national news and media without having to take trips to the store to pick up the newspaper. This has led to many seniors trying out devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets. Tablets are particularly popular, thanks to their larger screen (relative to smartphones) and less cumbersome nature (compared to laptops).

Getting around technology obstacles

Unfortunately, there are problems that prevent some seniors from using certain types of technology. For example, many seniors suffer from thick and leathery fingers, which can make using touchscreen devices, such as smartphones and tablets, a struggle.

However, this has led to a rise in voice-activated tools. Seniors can combat the fact that they may struggle with touch screen devices by using their voice instead! Devices such as Alexa not only solve problems associated with technology and skin related issues, but they can also help with wider issues linked to mobility. This can allow the senior in your care home more control over their life as they can use their voice to turn lights on and off, turn their TV on and off, change the temperature in their room – the list is endless!

Is your care home ready?

With ContinYou Care, we have created a problem that allows seniors to more easily choose their meals (with the assistance of dining staff) and receive their orders in a timely fashion.

We also offer digital signage solutions. In a world now taken over by technology, seniors, moving into a care home, don’t want to feel disconnected. Paper signage can make your care home feel outdated, and many seniors are now not only looking for the most comfortable, but the most modern care homes available.

The next generation of the platform will create a hotel-like experience for residents where they can order things right from their rooms.
